Kopa-Together in Latgale - 2007

Kopa/Together is a multi-project initiative supported by the British Embassy which aims to promote the idea of multicultural, diverse and inclusive society and to highlight the role of sport and arts as tools for building such a society and allowing any child, regardless of their ethnic background or special needs, to engage with peers.

The initiative Kopa/Together was started last year and culminated with a concert in Arena Riga during the visit of Queen Elizabeth II and The Duke of Edinburgh on 18-19 October 2006.

On 12 March 2007, the British Embassy in co-operation with the British Council launched a continuation of Kopa/Together with the aim of promoting integration of children from isolated or minority groups in the mainstream, fostering multicultural and inclusive education for children from diverse backgrounds.

The Kopa/Together competition will identify schools that assist understanding, communication and co-operation between children from diverse backgrounds by engaging minority children and/or children with special needs in shared activities.

The organisers invite schools to join the competition and both share their best practice of inclusive education and offer ideas for future projects in their schools. The organisers hope that publicity about best practice in schools will encourage teachers and schoolchildren to start thinking about how inclusive education can be expanded to more schools.

The total prize fund of the competition is LVL 4500. The three best projects submitted by schools will receive funding of up to 1000 LVL for their further implementation. A separate additional 1000 LVL prize is allocated for school projects from Latgale. The competition will close on 30 May and the award ceremony is planned this June.

The competition is implemented by NGO “Dialogi.lv”. The competition partners are the Association of the Disabled and Their Friends “Apeirons”, the National Agency for Latvian Language Training, Ministry of Education and Science and the Secretariat of Minister for Special Tasks on Integration.

The project is also a contribution to the European Year of Equal Opportunities.
