Ambassador Richard Moon wishes success for Baltic Pride 2009 (15/05/2009)
I am delighted that the Baltic pride march is taking place on 16 May as planned. The UK is pleased and proud to welcome Baltic PRIDE to Riga, the first Baltic event and I am passing on to you greetings from British ambassadors in Estonia and Lithuania.
We are committed to the success of the Riga march. Hence our co-sponsorship of the evening's event. There has been a particularly strong link between the UK and Riga because of the twinning partnership of Mozaika with Pride London. Hope there are lots of Brits here to demonstrate our support.
To reinforce the Baltic dimension to this year's event, we are glad to present to information booklets, which explain LGBT rights, the historical context of how those rights were recognised, some case studies and some FAQ.
This guidebook is based on the FCO's toolkit which is a central part of HMG's human rights policy in the UK and overseas. Embassies around the world are obviously a crucial part of this. The guidebook is available in Latvian, Estonian and Lithuanian as well as English.
The British embassy in Riga is proud to promote this campaign of information and awareness in Latvia and in the Baltic region.
We congratulate Mozaika and other bodies such as Amnesty International who remain determined and purposeful.
