Jonathan Portes, Chief Economist of the Cabinet Office, visited Riga on 14-15 October to attend a meeting of the High Level Advisory Group to the Prime Minister of Latvia. He also spoke with members of the Baltic-Nordic network of UK embassies in a teleconference and met Mr Ilmars Rimsevics, Governor of the Bank of Latvia. On the evening of his arrival he also dined with Finance Minister Einars Repse.
Mr Portes suggested flexibility to be one of the assets Latvia can use to recover and noted the importance of stimulating employment: “Nobody needs a cheerless, jobless recovery.”
