British Embassy in Latvia

The British Embassy in Latvia has a produced a logo for the 90th Anniversary of Proclamation of the Republic of Latvia which will be celebrated on 18 November. The British logo is based on Latvia's official anniversary logo, supplemented with Union Jack colours and a congratulatory message.

The Embassy and its partners, British Council in Latvia and the British Chamber of Commerce in Latvia, are using the logo on their correspondence and e-mails throughout 2008. The UK will also take part of a NATO parade to commemorate the 90th Anniversary.

In Latvia the anniversary will be marked with a wide programme of national and regional events, published on the official anniversary website and co-ordinated by the Latvian Ministry of Defence. In the UK Indulis Berzins, Ambassador of Latvia to the UK, will open an exhibition of photos on the occasion of the anniversary in Cardiff on 26 November.

The logo was launched on 13 June together with a small exhibition of historical photos on Latvian-British relations dating from 1918 at the Foreign Languages library of Riga.

Britain was the first country to recognise Latvia's de facto independence in 1918. Seven days before the independence was proclaimed, on 11 November 1918,  Foreign Secretary Balfour wrote a letter with an official confirmation that the United Kingdom acknowledged de facto statehood of Latvia.
